Joanna G ' South Pacific Lingerie ' began 10 years ago when the founder, Joanna was getting married second time around.
A discussion about how many times had they both done "it" on their previous wedding nights was held one night over a few wines, about a week before the wedding. Her husband-to-be stated that he had sex 4 times on his first wedding night. This almost caused panic and hyperventilation in Joanna, as being the second wife, she had to eclipse any memory of wedding night sex from the first marriage. This meant she had to ensure that they had sex a minimum of 5 times! Armed with this knowledge, she thought that in order to acheive this lofty goal, perhaps she should buy at least 4 different lingerie outfits to wear on the night. By appearing in a new outfit after each session and subsequent rest period, she would feel almost like a different woman each time and re-energised to make that goal a reality...
So, off to the shops she went. Visiting many lingerie stores in Christchurch, she rapidly became disappointed with the lack of sexy and fun lingerie available in the department and lingerie stores. This meant a trip to a dreaded sex shop! Looking right and left to make sure she didn't see anyone she knew, she ducked into the closest sex shop. Good grief! what a different world, it seemed as though every member of the raincoat brigade had made their weekly pilgrimage to that particular sex shop. Being the only woman in the store, of course, every male looked at her. She wanted the world to swallow her up on the spot. A big deep breath was taken and exploration of the store began.
The only lingerie in the store looked as though it had been there before the ark, any white pieces had yellowed with age and tacky took on a whole new meaning. The lingerie, if you could call it that, seemed to be more like strategically placed elastic, that on a more curvier figure would not look sexy at all. She then thought, ok, if I cannot find any lingerie, then perhaps I should get some sex toys....
The wall of sex toys contained many items that looked as though they should be wielded by someone wearing full leather, pretty scary and big! Joanna was intrigued however and wanted to know more about how they worked and why were some quite different from others. She thought that she should ask a staff member for advice. Behind the counter was a rather large man reading an adult magazine with a seriously unhappy look on his face. The thought that ran through her head, hang on, for a start, he does not look friendly and secondly he hasn't got my body parts, so is he really going to know how they operate??
Feeling distinctly uncomfortable, Joanna went to leave the store. Just as she was at the plastic hanging flaps that covered the door (nice), she bumped into a man entering. She looked up and to her horror, she saw that it was her boss! "So, what are you doing here?" the boss said. Joanna was so embarrassed and not able to think of any smart comments on the fly, she scuttled out of the store.
After recovering from the shopping trip from hell, she thought, how many other women felt the same way about buying sexy lingerie and adult toys?
Feeling there was a need for a place were women and couples could shop comfortably and learn new ways to enhance their relationships, she created Joanna G.
The company rapidly grew, party plans held and retail stores we soon located around NZ.
Growing too fast and a nasty recession put financial pressure on the company. Decisions had to be made. Joanna and her husband, Hamish, felt that Joanna G had to return to the founding goal of offering personal service and good value products. Stores were closed and a focus on online availability of fun, relationship products ensued.
